Modern Day Impressionist-Verone Solilo

Most people when they hear the word Impressionism think immediately of the greats like Renoir, Van Gogh, Degas, Manet or Cezanne just to name a few. However, right here in Airdrie we have our very own Impressionist painter. Her work is brilliant and alive with colour. Each work transporting us off into our own imaginary fantasy, walking under the street’s lights after the rain or floating along a canal in Venice. If not there, then perhaps frolicking on the beach where waves and sand meet. No matter the subject, the talent of this fine painter does not waiver as each piece is absolutely deserving of its own place on anyone’s wall.

Verone Solilo is this artist and with her comes an array of beautiful paintings and expertise. She is a humble, kindhearted painter who is always more than willing to share her knowledge with those who share her enthusiasm and the love of art. Verone is a passionate and enthusiastic artist living in Airdrie, Alberta. She recently relocated from Regina, Saskatchewan where she attended the University of Regina, raised three children, taught play school, did illustrations for books including her own children’s stories, and was a member of the Aurora Art Guild.

I have always been a fan of Impressionism, some of my favorite art comes from that era, so imagine my delight to come across this fabulous Artist- Verone Solilo. I can only aspire to become as confident and refined in my craft as she is.

Verone is on the board of the Airdrie Regional Arts Society donating her time and expertise willingly and assisting in bringing ARTS to the community. She has been painting and drawing for 55 years and for the last four years has been a full-time artist. Verone’s art has been featured in the Airdrie Life Magazine, Airdrie City View and Airdrie Echo. Most recently she held an online auction of her work where she donated 100% of the proceeds to the Airdrie Health Foundation raising $1,248.00 which will assist them in this ever-challenging time.

Verone is mostly a self-taught artist, her work shows in her studio as well at various art shows such as Spruce Meadows, Calgary Art Market, Airdrie Regional ARTs Society Spring and Winter shows, just to name a few. Her art hangs in private collections in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon, New Hampshire, Oregon and Australia. As a professional artist she has developed quite an extensive following.

Verone describes her art as “painting with emotion, every brushstroke has a purpose, every colour a meaning”. Although she has painted realism in the past, her style now is bright colours of expressive impressionism. She uses loose acrylic brush strokes and energetic knife work to insinuate, but not entirely describe what she imagines.

In retrospect she says, “I always leave something for the viewer to imagine and transport them to a place that is special to them”. “When I am painting, I imagine myself in a place of beauty. Then I re-invent it, with colour, shape, and line, to reflect my feelings of joy, awe, and thankfulness. This is my way of reminding myself of the goodness in people, the wonders of the world and our own irreplaceable value. I use both brush and pallet knife to apply bright acrylic colour on canvas in an abstract, impressionistic way, and sometimes in a more realistic way. Each piece is unique and brings out a different aspect of the 'joys of life' and the beauty that can be found in the simplest of things.”

Verone’s work is constantly evolving and continues to explore different avenues of expressions, from the smallest of details to the free-flowing expressions of abstract colour. Experiencing Verone’s work is one of the truest “joys of life” as one immerses him or herself in the splendor of the world she has created. Verone’s art speaks volumes of the talent that surrounds us in Airdrie. The anticipation of what comes next on a blank canvas and a lovely sunny afternoon is more than one can bear as we await her next creation.
